Project: Advent Calendar

This year I decided to celebrate Advent with the girls. Although I did not grow up with this tradition, nor was it taught in my church, the essential elements are to prepare our heart for the birth of Christ. With young ones, we are limited in how much they understand so I decided to take a cue from some other mom-bloggers and focus on family activities each night leading up to Christmas. So you will be seeing posts relating to our 25 days of activities (or I will 'fess up if we don't accomplish them one day, ok?)

To create our Advent countdown, I was inspired to use *mostly* what I had at home. When I saw this blog post that used a mini-muffin tin, I jumped on it. My friend Lisa loaned me her huge circle punch, which was just large enough to cover a mini-muffin hole. So I cut out some squares, rounded the edges, and put some magnets on the back (I cut apart some $1 magnet tape). I also added vinyl numbers (except I ran out at the end and need to make another run to the craft store at some point) and added a strip of paper describing each day's activity in the tin, underneath the date. Ta-da!

So far the girls haven't really gotten into the idea that we uncover a special "treat" each day, but I have decided this activity is as much for me as it is for them. It helps me focus on what's important - spending quality time with my family. Stay tuned to find out what we are doing for the next 25 days.

This turned out really nice. You used such cute papers. Don't ya hate when you have to make a return trip to the craft store!
